OBATA Makoto
President,
Nagoya Institute of Technology

Our Motto is “Engineering with Heart and Mind for Humanity”

Nagoya Institute of Technology (NITech) started as the Nagoya Higher Technical School, founded in 1905 as the first national institution in central Japan. Since then, NITech has produced more than 80,000 excellent graduates over about 120 years, contributing to the industrial and social development of the region and the country, as an engineering institution whose scale and history are among the largest and longest in Japan.

Currently, NITech offers the Advanced Engineering Education Program, the Creative Engineering Program, and the Fundamental Engineering Program. The Advanced Engineering Education Program covers almost all fields of engineering, consisting of Department of Life Science and Applied Chemistry, Department of Physical Science and Engineering, Department of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Department of Computer Science, Department of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Industrial Management Engineering. The Creative Engineering Program is a six-year integrated undergraduate and master’s degree program. The Fundamental Engineering Program is the evening program. To enable graduate students to address issues from a broader perspective, the Graduate School of NITech has actively promoted interdisciplinary research and education. Specifically, in the Master’s Course, we integrated majors into one Department of Engineering. Also in the Doctoral Course, five conventional majors were reorganized into the Department of Engineering. Moreover, in April 2024, we launched new programs, including multidisciplinary fields such as “Future Communications”, “Carbon Neutrality Science and Engineering” and “Biomedical Science and Engineering” in the Master’s Course, in addition to the programs in existing specialized fields. As for international relations, in April 2024 we also inaugurated the Nagoya Institute of Technology and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Energy Conversion Systems, as the second Joint Degree Doctoral Program for NITech.

Engineering is associated with Monozukuri (innovation), or manufacturing of products, which are ultimately linked to people. We are therefore aware of the importance of engineering as an academic discipline and the technical knowledge that places focus on relationships with people. In accordance with our motto “Engineering with Heart and Mind for Humanity,” NITech is implementing Hitozukuri (education) and Miraizukuri (social contribution). In this context, we provide opportunities and venues for education and research that activate the whole brain, including both the left brain, which controls calculation skills and logical thinking, and the right brain, which is related to creativity and imagination. At the same time, Nagoya Institute of Technology is committed to nurturing technical experts and engineers who will be able to play active roles in the forthcoming era.
