Globalization of Education

Academics

Nagoya Institute of Technology (NITech) has been promoting globalization of education through the Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Informatics, the Japanese-German graduate program "Cotutelle," the Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Energy Conversion Systems, and the Double Degree Program, among other initiatives.

Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Informatics

NITech is teaming up with the University of Wollongong in Australia to develop a long-term joint education and research program in informatics, with a focus on AI and multi-agent systems. Taking advantage of the educational and research resources at both institutions, the Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Informatics has been established. (Joint degree program: A system that enables a student who completes a joint educational program provided by partnered Japanese and overseas universities to earn a joint degree from both institutions.) Under the Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Informatics, world-class lecturers from both institutions jointly provide education and guidance. The program is designed to produce practical researchers and engineers who can lead the world in the field of informatics and pioneer new research fields, and those who can serve as global leaders in IT-related and other companies with a global presence to launch new businesses.

Japanese-German Graduate Program "Cotutelle" and Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Energy Conversion Systems

NITech and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Germany have been actively promoting faculty and student exchanges and joint research for many years, since an inter-departmental academic exchange agreement in the field of ceramics in 2009 and an inter-university academic exchange agreement and MOU for a Student Exchange Program signed in 2011.

In order to promote faculty and student exchanges more, two universities started the Japanese-German graduate program "Cotutelle" since October 2019 jointly, which is a co-tutoring program for students in doctoral courses engaged in research and doctoral thesis production, and adopted by many graduate schools in Europe. Moreover, expanding on this program, they have been offering the Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Energy Conversion Systems since April 2024.

In Japan, the program was adopted as a Japanese-German Graduate Externship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 2019 (Period: October 2019 to September 2028), and in Germany, this program by FAU has been part of the IRTG (International Research Training Group) of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Both NITech and FAU students are supported by JSPS and DFG respectively to take part in this program, and students enrolled at NITech will be conducting research in Germany for approximately one year (10 months or more), and the travel expenses will be supported.

The Joint Degree Doctoral Program aims to develop talented with advanced specialized knowledge in the field of energy conversion systems, who can create new values and bring about social transformation concertedly in order to realize a carbon-neutral society.

Double Degree Program

Since 2012, in collaboration with partner universities in China, NITech has conducted the Double Degree Program (enabling a student to earn degrees from two institutions by credit transfer, etc.) as an international graduate school program to produce international-minded engineers and researchers who will be active in companies and research institutions worldwide.
