In metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) using the powder bed fusion method, it has been found that addition of heterogeneous nucleation site particles can refine the grain structure and improve the formability. This study has demonstrated that addition of TiC heterogeneous nucleation site particles into Ti-6Al-4V samples can improve the microstructure and strength.
