In April 2025, two working students enrolled in the Nagoya Institute of Technology (NITech) and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) Joint Degree Doctoral Program in Energy Conversion Systems, becoming the first Japanese students to enroll in a doctoral program in engineering between Japan and Germany.
In this program, the second year of research activities in the three-year doctoral program will be conducted in Germany.
The two students who were admitted were Mr. HAYASHI Daiki from Toho Gas Co., Ltd. and Mr. MATOBA Kaoru from NGK INSULATORS, Ltd.
On Friday, March 28th, the newly accepted students, Mr. HAYASHI and Mr. MATOBA, were invited to a discussion with Executive Director (Research Planning, Evaluation) and Vice President KAKIMOTO Kenichi, who also serves as Director of the NITech FAU Liaison Office.
During the discussion, Mr. HAYASHI and Mr. MATOBA spoke of their aspirations, saying, "As researchers, we would like to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to see overseas technological capabilities up close and develop our communication skills and values as global human resources."
Executive Director KAKIMOTO said, "There is an remarkably small number of people with doctorates in Japan compared to other countries, so it makes sense to nurture doctorates in the Chubu region, where the industry is concentrated," expressing his hopes for nurturing engineers with internationally acclaimed degrees. He offered words of encouragement, saying, "I hope that both of you will experience life overseas firsthand and learn things that cannot be acquired through classroom learning, and that they will become role models for those considering continuing on to a doctoral program."
This matter was also covered in the morning edition of Chunichi Shimbun on Sunday, April 20th.
