Outline
This was a joint research project in which our institute participated in a "structural performance evaluation of the steel frame of the existing passenger canopy" carried out by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) in connection with the "earthquake reinforcement of the platform canopy." The main role of our institute is to conduct structural performance verification experiments on existing structures and structural simulations using numerical calculation methods, and also to propose reinforcement methods based on the results of these experiments.
The results of this study are being utilized in the earthquake-resistance reinforcement work that JR Central began in July 2021 (scheduled to continue until March 2033), with the reinforcement work being carried out in stages. Reinforcement of the canopies based on the results can be seen in the upper houses of major stations.
This time, the earthquake reinforcement technology for passenger canopies was recognized by the Association of Railway Architects, leading to the award.
