"Rethinking Message Buffer Structures for 100 Mpps Cloud-native Network Functions"
We drastically boosted packet forwarding efficiency of Cloud-native Network Functions (CNFs) toward the next-generation 6G network core. Specifically, we revisited packet structures available on commodity servers, and this resulted in over 99.9% of CPU cache (L1d) usage. Our result must accelerate the research and development of extremely flexible network slicing expected in 6G networks.
Award winner's comments
Efficiency of packet processing has long been a significant issue in software-based networking. Our approach can be a silver bullet of this problem in that fundamental efficiency of packet forwarding are enhanced many times. Furthermore, we have identified essential conditions to achieve the next-level performance. We are planning to assess our proposal on practical network environment.
