Outline
The Outstanding Paper Award of the Physical Society of Japan is presented by the Physical Society of Japan to members and others in recognition of their achievements in making important contributions to physics through original papers.
This research is the first in the world to demonstrate that chiral helimagnetism has been realized in rare-earth intermetallic compounds.
A resonant X-ray scattering experiment was conducted by a group led by Professor MATSUMURA Takeshi of Hiroshima University on the inorganic chiral material Yb(Ni1-xCux)3Al9, discovered by Professor OHARA Shigeo of our university. The experiment revealed that there is a one-to-one relationship between the handedness of the crystal and the helical magnetic structure, and that in a magnetic field, the material is expressed as a unique magnetic structure called a chiral soliton lattice.
These research results were recognized as important research that marked the beginning of systematic research into the chiral magnetic structures created by the handedness of crystals, and for this reason, he was awarded the Physical Society of Japan Prize.
